Silk does not need to be washed after every wear, instead hang your garments to ventilate, away from direct sunlight which can damage the colour. To remove any creases, cool iron on the reverse, ensuring you do not spray or wet the silk as this can cause water stains.
If machine washable, put the garment in a mesh bag to help protect from snagging and wash at 30 degrees on a low spin. Always check the care label. Alternatively, silk can be hand washed using cool water with a specialist silk detergent. Do not soak, instead swish the garment around in the water gently. Any stains will need to be handled at the dry cleaners – rubbing them can damage the fabric.
After washing silk, do not wring out as this will damage the fibres. Instead, lay the garment out on a towel and roll to absorb any moisture. Then lay it flat or hang to dry, away from direct sunlight.
Because moths love warm, damp conditions, silk should be stored in a cool, dry place and for extra protection, placed in a breathable cotton bag or hung in a clothing cover.
