BLACK TIE DRESS CODES

Wondering what “Black Tie” really means?
Traditionally a term that indicates the most formal of occasions, Black Tie is now underpinned with a more modern set of rules. Think of the 4 F’s:

1. Floor sweeping: Dresses and pants should fall to the ankle or below.

2. Fit: Silhouettes should fit neatly through the bodice and waist, with skirts and pants falling loosely through the leg.

3. Fabric: Lean on silk, heavyweight crepe or fabrics with a little lustre.

4. Finish: Avoid prints and patterns, while block color and embellishments are preferable.

“This collection goes beyond just sequins and silk. Each silhouette has been carefully tailored for an impeccable fit, with expert seamwork and considered details for added drama.”

BRAND DIRECTOR

DO I HAVE TO WEAR BLACK?

No! Originally used to suggest the need for a formal suit and black tie, “Black Tie” for women has always allowed for colorful dresses.

With seasonal elegance in mind, look to alluring jewel tones, pops of red, and monochrome.

CAN I WEAR BLACK?

Absolutely! Nothing is as chic as a black dress, but for your main event you’ll want something extra special. Lean on light-catching fabrics like velvet and satin, or embellished accents for a point of difference.

HOW TO LAYER AT A BLACK TIE EVENT

Black Tie is all about looking your best – weather-appropriate layers included. And typically the season with the most opulent events, winter leaves the need for more than a blazer nonchalantly hung over the shoulder.

Faux fur, wool overcoats and tailored silhouettes are a fail-safe option, while military-inspired coats are perfect for more formal or charitable events.

BLACK TIE ACCESSORIES

Wondering what shoes to wear to a black tie event? Or how to elevate a black dress? Accessories are an easy way to dial up the drama of an outfit.

When it comes to shoes, a heel best complements a maxi dress. Look to satin or velvet for textural elevation.

Jewellery should match the undertones in your outfit – if your dress has silver embellishments, stick to cool tones. And if in doubt, lean on perennial pearls.
