October

BFI FILM FESTIVAL

Be the first to see the best films from all corners of the world at the biggest event in the capital's film-going calendar. As well as exclusive gala screenings and fascinating Q&As with filmmakers, there'll be short films, talks and workshops to enjoy. Get cosy in the cinema with our snug knitwear.

HAUSER & WIRTH PUMPKIN FESTIVAL

Get into the Halloween spirit at the annual Hauser & Wirth Pumpkin Festival in Somerset. Among a variety of activities for adults and children, the day will centre around The Grand Pumpkin Competition, which will be judged by local resident and renowned gardener Charles Downing. Wear jeans with a little stretch to allow for overindulgence.

FRIEZE ART FAIR

Fancy yourself as an art connoisseur? Then you'll want to add the Frieze London art fair to your diary this month. Returning to Regent's Park for another year, it's a chance to browse the best of international contemporary art by emerging and established artists. Wear a comfy pair of shoes ‒ there's a lot to see.

NEW FOREST WALKING FESTIVAL

When it comes to enjoying the spectacular scenery of autumn, you'd be hard-pressed to beat the New Forest. So dust off your walking boots and head to this beautiful national park for its annual walking festival, where you'll discover more about the history, heritage and wildlife of the forest. CHELTENHAM LITERATURE FESTIVAL

Every autumn, Cheltenham Literature Festival celebrates the joy of the written word with a programme of debates, interviews and workshops with some of the world's finest writers, thinkers and performers. Naturalist Sir David Attenborough, novelist Kate Atkinson and author Caitlin Moran are among the stars in this year's line up. Make sure you're sitting comfortably in well-fitting trousers.

SCARBOROUGH JAZZ FESTIVAL

All that jazz. Wash away those post summer blues with a trip to the annual Scarborough Jazz Festival. Boasting record numbers year on year, the award-laden event promises an outstanding programme of music in the grand Victorian surroundings of Scarborough Spa. Wear your dancing shoes.

LONDON FASHION WEEK

Sweetie, darling! September sees the fashion glitterati flock to the capital for one of the most coveted events of the year. And while it's unlikely you'll be sitting on the front row, unless of course you're part of that crowd, London Fashion Week Festival offers a chance to catch catwalk shows and industry talks. Only your most on-trend dress will do.

BLENHEIM PALACE HORSE TRIALS

THE WIMBLEDON LAWN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA

Sporting events don't come much more quintessentially English than the Henley Royal Regatta. Since 1830, rowers, socialites and picnic-goers have gathered on the banks of the River Thames for five days of racing and traditional summer fun. Opt for smart casual attire.

RA SUMMER EXHIBITION IN LONDON

Now in its 250th annual celebration of "art made now", this year's exhibition promises to be the biggest, brightest and most colourful yet. Grayson Perry RA and his committee of fellow artists have handpicked over 1,300 artworks from the likes of David Hockney RA, Tracey Emin and Martin Parr. BBC PROMS IN LONDON

Classical connoisseur? Pop the Proms in your diary. Predominantly taking place at London's Royal Albert Hall, the festival encompasses an eight-week summer season of daily classical music concerts from the world's greatest orchestras, as well as workshops, talks and family events.
